From Rental-Kings to Ezly Rent: How I Built a Rental SaaS Platform with a Dynamic Marketplace.

In 2013, after hearing my older sister complain about the struggle of renting materials for an upcoming event, I became fascinated by the party rental industry. I noticed that much of the industry was dominated by small, family-owned businesses. With that realization, and the help of a few team members, I launched Rental-Kings, a party rental business serving the vibrant South Shore Boston community. Since then, we’ve completed over 1,000 unique events, working with renowned organizations such as Boston Children’s Hospital, P&G Gillette, and Cosentino, among others.
However, after observing shifts in consumer behavior and the challenges of starting and maintaining a rental business, I co-founded Ezly Rent with the goal of simplifying the rental experience for everyone. Transitioning from running a traditional party rental business to building a dynamic rental marketplace with SaaS software has been a transformative journey, and each step with Rental-Kings provided the insights and skills I needed to create Ezly Rent—a platform that makes renting and lending as seamless as shopping online.
Learning from Customer Feedback
At Rental-Kings, customer feedback was invaluable. I began using surveys like Net Promoter Score (NPS) to measure customer satisfaction and quickly address any issues. When we built Ezly Rent, we carried that lesson forward, prioritizing customer feedback through multiple touchpoints—whether in-platform surveys, chatbot interactions, or direct phone calls to local businesses. By actively listening to users, we were able to fine-tune the platform and ensure it met their exact needs.
Understanding the Competitive Market
The rental industry is competitive, and succeeding means knowing the landscape and what differentiates you from competitors. At Ezly Rent, we consistently analyzed our competitors to identify gaps in the market that we could fill. This allowed us to focus on leveraging AI-powered solutions and creating a marketplace experience that simplifies the rental process, which became our key differentiator.
Building a Product with a Collaborative Team
One major difference between Rental-Kings and Ezly Rent was the need for cross-functional teamwork. While Rental-Kings was a more hands-on business, Ezly Rent required the building and management of a team across various functions—designers, engineers, and marketers. Using an agile approach, we constantly improved the platform with bi-weekly releases and intensive QA testing. We also held weekly meetings to ensure alignment with company goals and the overall vision. Collaborating across teams was essential to staying on track while making necessary adjustments.
Adopting an Agile and Innovative Approach
Speaking of agility, adopting an agile approach at Ezly Rent was crucial for keeping the platform innovative. We embraced agile practices, constantly iterating based on user feedback and evolving market demands. This allowed us to quickly add or remove features and pivot as needed—whether it was refining our SaaS rental software or improving the marketplace. Monthly interactions with users through chatbots helped us maintain that constant connection and innovate continuously. For us, innovation wasn’t just a buzzword—it was a mindset that helped us stay ahead of the curve.
Pitching to Investors and Engaging Stakeholders
Building Ezly Rent meant regularly pitching to investors and stakeholders, which required me to refine my storytelling skills and craft data-driven presentations. Every pitch was an opportunity to highlight the value of our SaaS rental software and dynamic marketplace, showcasing how we simplified the customer experience while creating profitable partnerships for local rental businesses.
Leveraging Data to Improve Customer Experience
At Ezly Rent, data became the cornerstone of decision-making. While Google Analytics was essential for tracking Adwords performance at Rental-Kings, Ezly Rent took data utilization to the next level. One of our selling points to local businesses using Ezly Rent to rent out their materials was the ability to provide monthly reports on user rental behavior. Tracking user behavior helped us understand the customer journey—from the first click to checkout—and empowered local businesses to thrive on our platform. We tracked key interactions such as clicks on products, searches, wish lists, and bookings. Data wasn’t just a tool—it was the lifeblood of Ezly Rent, driving insights that enhanced both customer experience and the value proposition for our local partners.
The Wrap Up
Transitioning from Rental-Kings to building Ezly Rent has been a transformative journey. The skills I gained—from gathering customer feedback and understanding the competitive market to building a product with a cross-functional team and pitching to investors—were instrumental in making Ezly Rent what it is today. It’s been an incredible learning experience, and I look forward to helping other entrepreneurs build solutions that make life easier for their customers.

Case Study: How I Used Data Analytics To Our Understand of Ezly Rent’s User Rental Behavior

Hey everyone! If you’re new to my site, my name is Richard Cadet. I’m a startup tech enthusiast and a two-time founder. Today, I would like to share how I used data analytics to better understand our users’ rental behavior and improve our platform at Ezly Rent.
The Analytical Tools Behind Our Insights
At Ezly Rent, we believe that knowledge is power, and in the rental business, understanding our customers’ needs and behaviors is crucial. By leveraging multiple analytical tools like Google Analytics, Algolia, Tag Manager, Stripe, and our MongoDB database, I was able to delve deep into our customers’ interactions with our platform. This suite of powerful tools allowed us to analyze:
- Search Behavior: What items our users were searching for most frequently.
- Average Cart Size: The typical value of items that customers added to their carts.
- Repeat Customers: How often users returned to make additional rentals.
- Wish Lists: What items users saved for future consideration.
- Top Products and Most Clicks: Identifying which items were getting the most attention and traction on our platform.
Turning Data into Actionable Insights
By compiling and analyzing this rich data, we gained invaluable insights that helped us tailor our services to better meet our users’ needs. Here’s a snapshot of what we discovered and how it drove our business forward:
- Top States Creating Buzz
- Massachusetts and Florida emerged as the leaders with the most views on Ezly Rent. Understanding regional interest helped us target our marketing efforts and inventory distribution more effectively.
- Hottest Rental Searches
- Items like chairs, tables, and linens were consistently at the top of our users’ searches. This information allowed us to ensure we had ample supply and variety of these high-demand items.
- Trendsetting Items of 2023
- Backdrops became the trendiest rental items that year. Staying ahead of such trends enabled us to keep our inventory fresh and appealing to our users.
- Average Cart Size & Repeat Customer Insights
- Analyzing the average cart size and repeat customer data provided us with key metrics essential for revenue maximization. This insight helped us create better deals and loyalty programs to enhance customer retention.
Driving Digital Marketing with Data
From a digital marketing perspective, the data we gathered was a game-changer. It allowed us to craft highly targeted and effective advertising campaigns. Here’s how we did it:
Targeted Ads on Meta and Google AdWords
By understanding what items our users were searching for and adding to their wish lists, we could create precise audience segments for targeted ads on Meta (formerly Facebook) and Google AdWords. We focused on users who had shown interest in specific rental items, ensuring our ads were relevant and compelling. This strategy significantly boosted our click-through rates and conversions.
Geo-Targeted Campaigns
With insights into which states were creating the most buzz, we launched geo-targeted campaigns in Massachusetts and Florida. By tailoring our messages and promotions to these high-interest regions, we maximized our marketing ROI and strengthened our presence in these key markets.
Leveraging Trends for Marketing
Knowing that backdrops were the trendsetting items of 2023, we centered several ad campaigns around these products. Highlighting trendy items in our ads not only attracted more clicks but also positioned Ezly Rent as a forward-thinking, trend-aware brand.
The Wrap Up
My time at Ezly Rent was a transformative experience that underscored the power of data analytics in understanding and meeting customer needs. By leveraging various analytical tools, we were able to gather deep insights into user behavior, which drove strategic decisions and ultimately strengthened our business. Presenting this data to stakeholders further solidified our position as a forward-thinking, data-driven company. Looking back, the journey was filled with invaluable lessons that continue to shape my entrepreneurial approach today. Let’s keep learning, innovating, and making history, baby. Let’s have a great time while doing it.
Presenting Ezly Rent To Suffolk University MBA Students & The Lessons Learned From It

What’s up y’all! Today, I want to share my experience presenting Ezly Rent in front of the MBA students of Suffolk University and the valuable lessons I learned along the way.
Keep It Simple, Stupid (K.I.S.S.)
One of the biggest takeaways from my presentation was the importance of simplicity. The more complicated I made my slides, the more confusing they became. However, shorter and simpler slides delivered a more powerful message. The K.I.S.S. principle truly works wonders in making your ideas clear and impactful.
Engage the Audience
Engaging the audience is crucial. I found that moving around, making eye contact, and interacting with the students kept them interested and involved. It’s not just about delivering information; it’s about creating a connection and making the presentation dynamic and engaging.
Trust in Your Knowledge
One of the most important lessons I learned was that I know my stuff, and there’s no need to doubt myself. When you’re passionate about your business and knowledgeable about your field, it shows. Confidence is key, and it’s important to trust in your expertise and experience.
Curiosity is King
In environments like these, the audience is usually curious and eager to learn. There’s no need to overthink your presentation. Focus on delivering your core message and addressing their curiosity with clarity and confidence.
Structuring the Presentation
A well-structured presentation makes a world of difference. I found that addressing the following key points helped create a coherent and compelling narrative:
- Problem: Clearly define the problem you’re addressing.
- Solution: Explain how your product or service solves this problem.
- Team: Highlight the strengths and expertise of your team.
- Competitive Landscape: Identify your competitors and what sets you apart.
- Market Size: Showcase the potential market and opportunity for growth.
Learning from the MBA Students
Presenting to the MBA students wasn’t just about sharing my knowledge; it was also a learning experience for me. Here are a few insights I gained from them:
The Power of Asking the Right Questions: The students’ questions were insightful and thought-provoking. They showed me how asking the right questions can unlock new ideas and perspectives. It’s a reminder that being inquisitive and open to feedback is essential for growth.
Value of Traditional Marketing: Sometimes, old-school marketing methods like brochures and newsletters still have great ROI. In our digital age, it’s easy to overlook these tried-and-true strategies, but they can be incredibly effective when done right.
The Wrap Up
Presenting Ezly Rent to the MBA students at Suffolk University was an enlightening experience. It reinforced the importance of simplicity, engagement, confidence, and the value of curiosity. Additionally, it reminded me of the effectiveness of traditional marketing methods and the power of asking the right questions.
